The Magic of Super Bowl Commercials

By Emma Sievert

Every year, millions of Americans gather around their television screens not just for football, but for another spectacle altogether: the Super Bowl ads. What is it about these commercials that captivates audiences, generates buzz, and leaves a lasting impression long after the final touchdown? Let's delve into the world of Super Bowl advertising to understand the allure behind America's favorite commercials.

One of the key ingredients of Super Bowl ads is creativity. These commercials are often the result of months of brainstorming, planning, and production, with advertisers striving to outdo each other in terms of innovation and originality. From clever humor to heartwarming narratives, Super Bowl ads run the gamut of emotions, resonating with viewers on a deeper level than traditional advertisements.

An instant "fan favorite" title was given to CeraVe, for their hilarious ad that included actor Michael Cera. Cera stars as the creator of Cerave, he tries to convince the audience (who later becomes a table of CeraVe executives who are watching Cera pitch the commercial, simply because "it's a perfect crossover opportunity") to buy CeraVe by showing a world of relaxation and narwhals. The silliness of this ad really pleased most watchers, and is highly recognized as one of the best ads from the Super Bowl 2024.

Moreover, Super Bowl ads boast high production values that rival those of Hollywood blockbusters. With top-notch cinematography, cutting-edge special effects, and A-list celebrity cameos, these commercials are a feast for the viewers. However, it's not just the spectacle that draws people in; it's also the shared experience of watching the Super Bowl ads with friends, family, and even strangers online. The Super Bowl has become more than just a football game; it's a cultural event that brings people together from all walks of life. Whether you're a die-hard football fan or just in it for the commercials, the Super Bowl is an occasion to connect, celebrate, and engage with others.

Cetaphil captivated viewers with a heartwarming, relevant, and relatable ad, "A New Sports Tradition for Dads & Daughters". It was extra special since the two actors were real life father and daughter. The father, a football fan, wears his jersey and supports his team from the couch. His daughter is a stereotypical young girl, shown by clips of her doing her makeup and even referencing her likeness towards singer Taylor Swift. It ends with the dad presenting to his daughter a #13 jersey for her to wear and they watch a football game together. While not outwardly saying the reasons for their newfound bonding moment, it is assumed that the father and daughter bond over Swifts' recent involvement in the NFL team, the Kansas City Chiefs, due to her romantic relationship with player Travis Kelce. It was a sweet moment that is very relatable to many people.

The anticipation surrounding Super Bowl ads is palpable, with viewers eagerly awaiting the next big commercial break. In the days leading up to the game, teasers and previews offer glimpses of what's to come, building excitement and fueling speculation about which ads will steal the show. The element of surprise is part of the appeal, as advertisers strive to keep audiences on the edge of their seats with unexpected twists and turns.

Google released their emotional ad "Javier in Frame", to promote the new Google Pixel phone. This one minute clip showed how their product can be used by those with visual impairments, such as Javier. Viewers are able to see Javiers life grow through his pictures. From the phone announcing only one face in frame, to three faces, it is a heartwarming and very real story to many people. This representation was loved by many, even those who do not have this limitation.

Super Bowl ads have a lasting impact that extends far beyond game day. In the age of social media, these commercials spark conversations, ignite debates, and go viral within minutes of airing. Memorable moments are shared, dissected, and replayed across various platforms, ensuring that the advertising blitz continues long after the final whistle blows.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Super Bowl ads is their ability to tap into the collective psyche of the American public. These commercials reflect the hopes, fears, and aspirations of society at large, offering a glimpse into our cultural zeitgeist. Whether they're addressing social issues, celebrating diversity, or simply entertaining audiences, Super Bowl ads have the power to shape perceptions, challenge conventions, and influence behavior on a massive scale. The allure of Super Bowl ads lies in their ability to entertain, inspire, and connect with audiences on a deeply personal level. From their creativity and production values to their shared experience and cultural impact, these commercials have become an integral part of the Super Bowl phenomenon.

As we eagerly await the next wave of advertising brilliance, one thing is certain: the magic of Super Bowl ads will continue to entertain and inspire us for years to come.
