“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

As children, we were asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” In high school, it was “what do you want to major in” and in college, it’s “what do you want to do for the rest of your life?” We have grown up being asked this age-old question, but no matter how old we are, we seem to always consider a different answer.
A preconceived notion about college is that you need to know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life, otherwise you are wasting time and money. But to be completely honest, to those lucky freshmen and sophomores reading this blog post, you typically don’t “find yourself” or find what you want to do until you put yourself out there. As a junior, I can tell you that until last year when I joined AMA, I was one of the many lost, stressed and broke students that spent most of my time at the library wrapped in a blanket hoping I would be enlightened by some universal force. This organization was the reason I found myself and what I want to do for, what I hope, to be the rest of my life. And uniquely enough it wasn’t just the speakers, corporate tours and free food, provided by my wonderful boyfriend and former AMA Director of Socials, it was the friendships and connections I made within the club. People say, “surround yourself with positive people who are going to push you toward greatness.” This is a quote that you should abide by especially in college where people come and go but the right ones always stay. Everyone that I have met or have become friends with in AMA has pushed me to be a better person, to find things I’m passionate about and run with them and to never give up on myself despite how many times I want to inhale a pack of double stuffed of Oreos. I am truly grateful for this opportunity.
With that said, I believe that AMA can offer anything to anyone, no matter what you think you want to do in life. Never did I expect to find a passion in graphic design and public speaking or create such an AMAzing group of friends that I could go to for anything. This organization isn’t just about learning about marketing. It’s about branding yourself, marketing your capabilities and embracing “you.” I strongly encourage you put yourself out there, be bold and join this organization!
